The EU encourages political stability and multiparty democracy in Nepal. With the deployment of a large Election Observation Mission, the EU has been actively engaged in supporting Nepal’s peace process, which led in May 2008 to the abolition, by the Constituent Assembly, of the monarchy and the establishment of a Republic.

EU development co-operation with Nepal aims to contribute also to peace and stability in the country. In the framework of its Country Strategy Paper (2007-2013) and in close consultation with other donors and with the Nepalese authorities, the EU will support during the period 2007-2013 stability and peace building activities, education for all, trade facilitation and economic capacity building (see Country Strategy Paper pdf - 269 KB [269 KB]  + Mid-Term Review pdf - 164 KB [164 KB]  + Indicative Programme 2011-2013 pdf - 164 KB [164 KB]  ).

A Memorandum of Understanding on the Multi-Annual Indicative Programme (MIP) 2011-2013 was signed between the EU and Nepal in January 2011. EU co-operation covers three main sectors - education, support to stability and peace building and trade and economic capacity building.
